Resume vs Prezume (why not both!)

Just recently we have been trying to hire a new designer to join our team. To help save some pennies we decided not to use a recruitment agency and advertised ourselves instead.
After viewing nearly 300 Resumes in 2 weeks I can honestly say that one thing is obvious….

99.9% of resumes SUCK!

I have been amazed at just how bad the resumes are that we have seen. Here are some of the classic mistakes that have deeply upset me to see:

  • Photographs of the applicant having a very bad hair day
  • Submitting a Microsoft word document that anybody can edit (use pdf you dummies!)
  • Broken links that lead nowhere
  • Use of comic sans font
  • And so on, and so on…….honestly I could be here all day!

It’s 2014 people

The jobs market has never been more competitive than it is right now. The fact we had 300 resumes submitted in 2 weeks just goes to show how many people are out there fighting for jobs.
But to get ahead you’re going to have to do something different to stand out from the crowd. Just submitting a standard A4 resume probably won’t cut it with so much filtering needing to be done by the people recruiting.
Sure you can add more colour, good design, and avoid the bad habits mentioned above. But do you know how easy it is to convert your resume into an amazing Prezi presentation that can be viewed online?
We call these Prezume’s (of course!) and they are starting to be used a lot by those of us willing to go the extra mile to try and get that job.

Here is my Prezume

Below is my Prezume so that you can see an example of what they are. It needs updating but you’ll get the idea.

If you want to go and start building your own Prezume right now you can grab some free templates from the Prezi website by clicking here.

An important tip before you start

Let’s be honest. Most job websites that you’ll be applying through won’t let you submit a Prezi file as they will only allow for Word or PDF files. So PLEASE don’t think for a second that your Prezume is going to replace your standard A4 resume.
We would recommend that you keep your standard resume nice and simple, but make sure there is a link (that works) to your Prezume at the top. If you hyperlink the text you could also be a little clever and try to grab the recruiters attention like this:

HEY RECRUITER, PICK ME, PICK ME, PICK ME
The above options are at your discretion obviously but fortune favours the brave 😉

Good luck

Email us links to your Prezume and we’ll gladly share it with the world for you.
